About the JLPT N5 Level
JLPT N5 is the entry-level tier of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. It certifies that you can understand basic Japanese used in everyday situations. To pass, you need to know approximately 800 vocabulary words and around 100 kanji characters, along with fundamental grammar patterns and the ability to read short, simple sentences.
The vocabulary at this level covers essential topics you would encounter in daily life: greetings, numbers, time expressions, family members, food, colors, common verbs, and basic adjectives. Many of these words come from core categories like nouns (名詞 meishi), verbs (動詞 doushi), adjectives (形容詞 keiyoushi), and adverbs (副詞 fukushi).
N5 kanji are the most commonly used characters in Japanese. Each kanji has one or more readings — the on'yomi (Chinese-derived reading) and the kun'yomi (native Japanese reading). At this level, you will learn kanji for numbers (一、二、三), days of the week (月、火、水), basic concepts (大、小、上、下), and more.
